The Lung’s Hidden Power: A Modern & Ancient Connection to Blood

In acupuncture school, I learned that in Chinese medicine, the lungs play a vital role in blood formation. At the time, Western science seemed to disagree. But new research has flipped that script.
In the ever-evolving world of medical science, few discoveries challenge conventional wisdom quite like this: the lungs—not just the bone marrow—are active participants in blood production. For decades, textbooks taught that the lungs’ sole job was gas exchange. Today, that narrative has expanded dramatically, thanks to recent breakthroughs in hematopoiesis research.
Scientists now know the lungs produce platelets—tiny cells crucial for clotting—and house stem cells that can regenerate blood components. In cases of bone marrow damage, these lung-resident cells can even restore blood production.
Beyond Breathing: The Lung's Hematopoietic Role
A study from the University of California, San Francisco, stunned the medical community by revealing that the lungs produce over half of the body’s platelets—the tiny blood fragments responsible for clotting and wound repair.
Key Findings
Platelet Factories: Using live imaging in mice, researchers tracked megakaryocytes—large bone marrow cells thought to be platelet producers—residing in the lungs, not just in bones.
Stem Cell Storage: The lungs house hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) capable of generating red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells.
Bone Marrow Backup: In cases of bone marrow failure or damage, lung-resident stem cells can migrate to the marrow and replenish blood production.
This discovery redefines our understanding of how the circulatory system is supported and opens up tantalizing possibilities for treating blood disorders.
Chinese Medicine View
Chinese Medicine has long taught that the lungs combine air Qi with food Qi (from the Spleen) to help create blood, and assist the Heart in moving it throughout the body. Other key players:
Spleen: Generates and holds blood
Heart: Transforms Qi into blood, governs circulation, and nourishes and carries the Shen (mind/spirit).
Liver: Stores and regulates blood
Kidneys: Contribute essential essence (Jing) for marrow and blood
Lungs: Receives Gu Qi (qi from food) with air to form blood and helps circulate blood by assisting the Heart with Lung Qi.
Healing Tools
Acupuncture, cupping, breathing exercises, qi gong, and more can boost Lung Qi to improve circulation, relieve congestion, support blood flow and production, promote blood oxygenation, and reduce inflammation in the body.
